ACLU of Illinois

One of the biggest obstacles to police accountability in Illinois is qualified immunity.
For far too long, bad apples in the state’s ranks have been protected by qualified immunity— shielding them from liability and preventing the victims of police abuse or their families from holding these individuals accountable.
Lawmakers in the Land of Lincoln must finally address this public safety crisis. They have a duty to protect their citizens by holding bad cops who resort to such violent tactics as using excessive force accountable for their actions.
By eliminating qualified immunity, municipalities all over Illinois can be more selective in whom they hire. The result: communities will have more decent officers patrolling their streets. This will transform policing in the state and safety within communities—for the better.
