CNN reports: More than 1,000 pro athletes have created a coalition and signed a letter to Congress. In this letter, the athletes state their support for ending qualified immunity (QI.) Names include Tom Brady, Odell Beckham, Jr., Tony Gonzalez, and Gregg Popovich.
“The Supreme Court has caused irreparable harm to public trust by creating and then expanding the doctrine of qualified immunity,” the letter says. “In their grief, people have taken to the streets because for too long, their government has failed to protect them. The courts and elected officials alike have instead shielded people who caused unspeakable harm.”
The Players Coalition is affiliated with the Campaign to End Qualified Immunity, and formed in response to the killing of George Floyd. The coalition is throwing its support behind the Ending Qualified Immunity Act. The bill was originally proposed by reps. Ayanna Pressley and Justin Amash to address growing concerns over the lack of accountability in cases of police brutality. This coalition of athletes, performing artists, business leaders and more works towards ending QI.
