John Oliver also thinks qualified immunity protects bad cops from accountability. On a recent airing of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver delivered a biting primer on the “dire consequences” of police raids, particularly in light of Breonna Taylor’s death.
On the subject of botched raids, Oliver brings up qualified immunity: “Amazingly, there often aren’t consequences . . . officers are rarely criminally charged, and even more rarely, convicted . . .police officers are protected from civil liability by the doctrine of qualified immunity.”
