End Qualified Immunity New York (EQI NY) is a coalition of activists working in New York State and New York City to pass legislation that ends the legal doctrine of qualified immunity. Bushwick Youth Coalition (BYC) is a critical partner in the coalition to end qualified immunity both nationally and in New York.
In this video, BYC and EQI NY’s Terresa Danzey speaks on how the lack of liability has negatively impacted American policing.
“When police officers know that there’s very little chance that they will be held personally accountable for violating a person of color’s rights, they say, ‘Why not?'” Terresa remarks. That’s why she believes ending qualified immunity can help unravel the effects of systemic racism in law enforcement.
