In a landmark move, Colorado became the first state in the union to strike down qualified immunity.
Prompted by the murder of George Floyd and the nationwide protests it sparked, the Colorado State Legislature passed a “sweeping” police accountability bill, which Gov. Jared Polis signed into law this past June, Reuters reported.
Along with ending qualified immunity, the statute requires police agencies to adopt body cams and bans the use of chokeholds.
The legislation passed with support from the state’s police chiefs and county sheriffs’ organizations. They released a joint statement pointing out that many of the policies contained in the new law are already in place at the local level.
