CTEQI partners published an op-ed with support for HB 4, the New Mexico Civil Rights Act.
Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield and coalition partner Mark Holden from Americans for Prosperity recently contributed the op-ed to the Santa Fe New Mexican. In it, they speak in favor of HB 4. The bill, which targets qualified immunity in New Mexico, was approved by the state’s House and Senate on March 17. HB 4 is currently being reviewed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
As the op-ed notes, Cohen, Greenfield, and Holden may have different perspectives on certain issues. But when it comes to police accountability, they “speak with one voice: Qualified immunity needs to end.”
“Colorado enacted a similar measure last year, what one expert said was, for the moment, the ‘gold-standard reform’,” they write. “New Mexico can now seize this moment, align itself with the gold standard and ensure its residents have access to every protection afforded by the Constitution.”
The full coalition of CTEQI partners continues to leverage support for HB 4. The partners are pushing for a quick and speedy signature from the Governor.
